What are the different types of SEO?

Guide to SEO This topic comes under chapter 2 in our SEO guide.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of making your website more search engine friendly to get better rankings and thereby increasing the traffic to your website.

In this blog, I’ve explained the different types of SEO that you can implement to improve your website’s rankings.

Let’s get started!

Types of SEO

There are three types of SEO

  1. On-page SEO
  2. Off-page SEO
  3. Technical SEO

Note: Some people consider local SEO as another type of SEO. However, in my opinion, local SEO is a combination of both on-page SEO and off-page SEO as it involves both of them.

1. On-page SEO

On-page SEO, otherwise known as on-site SEO, is directly related to the contents of your website. It deals with optimizing the web pages and making them rank better in the search results.

Some on-page SEO factors include writing high-quality content, keyword optimization, title tags optimization, URL optimization, etc.

The following are the tips to improve your web page’s on-page SEO

  • Write high-quality content that provides value to the users. Before you start writing, perform keyword research and make your blog keyword-optimized to rank high in the search results.
  • The title tags should be short, catchy, and descriptive. The title tags appear as a clickable link in the search results. So, it’s essential to optimize them correctly to get more clicks.
  • Include the focus keyword (primary keyword) in the title tag as it helps to rank better.
  • The URL of a page should be short and descriptive
  •  Utilize the internal linking strategy to improve PageRank and make search engines understand the structure of your website. Internal linking refers to linking to the pages within the same website.

2. Off-page SEO

Off-page SEO (or off-site SEO) happens outside of your website. It deals with improving the website’s exposure and authority.

Most off-page SEO works deal with building backlinks. A backlink is a hyperlink that your website gets from other websites.

Backlinks — Diagrammatic representation

Backlinks are one of the significant factors that affect the ranking of a website in search results.

If websites with high domain authority link to your website’s content, search engines can understand that your content is valuable and worth ranking in the search results.

There are two types of backlinks.

  • Dofollow backlinks – It helps SEO by allowing the transfer of link equity to the linking website.
  • Nofollow backlinks – It doesn’t allow the transfer of link equity. A default link is made nofollow by adding a rel=”nofollow” tag.

The following are some tips to build backlinks to your website

  • Guest post to get high-quality backlinks to your website. In the guest posting method, you write and publish content on someone else’s website. You can add the link to your website in the content, if relevant.
  • If you want to gain backlinks automatically, publish high-quality content.
  • Perform original research in your niche and publish it on your website to gain backlinks quickly. Researching takes time, but trust me — it’s worth it.
  • Email outreach to famous bloggers asking them to provide you a backlink. In the email, make sure to mention the reasons why linking your blog will benefit their audience.
  • Utilize the broken link building strategy to get backlinks. In this method, you find the broken external links on websites and inform the webmasters about them via email. You request them to replace the broken link with your blog’s link explaining the benefits.

Note: You can promote your website on social media platforms and forums to drive targeted traffic. However, note that these links will be mostly nofollow. But, why not give it a try and increase the website traffic?

3. Technical SEO

As the name suggests, technical SEO is related to the technical elements of optimizing a website. In other words, technical SEO deals with non-content elements of a website.

Technical SEO includes page loading speed, website security, structured data, website architecture, sitemaps, fixing broken links, etc.

The following are the tips to improve the technical SEO of your website

  • Add structured data to your website as it can help you get more clicks. Structured data can also help search engines better understand your web page’s content.
  • Provide a good user experience to the users. Nowadays, many people browse the internet on their smartphones. So, it’s essential to make your website mobile-friendly.
  • The faster a page loads, the better. You can compress the images and remove unnecessary elements to increase the loading speed.
  • Improve the site structure as it’s essential for SEO. The site structure refers to how the pages are linked to each other.

Some of the common technical SEO issues include the following.

  • Duplicate content
  • Incorrect site indexing
  • Broken links
  • Poor mobile optimization
  • Slow website loading speed

Ok.

Before moving on with the conclusion, I would like to explain more about structured data as it’s becoming more and more important for SEO.

Structured data is a part of technical SEO. It helps search engines to understand the web page’s content better.

Moreover, structured data can enhance your webs page’s appearance in the search results, helping to increase the click-through rate (CTR).

Many new webmasters may not have added structured data to their websites yet. If so, I suggest you give it a try.

Once you add the structured data to your website, you can check it using Google’s Rich Results Test

Conclusion

SEO is one of the most effective marketing strategies. It’s affordable and can yield long-term results.

If you want SEO to work the best for you, employ all three types of SEO in your website.

If you’re a beginner, I suggest you use the tips provided in this blog to optimize your website for the different types of SEO.
